In his annual report on Napa, Antonio Galloni found little to criticize. Then, Cabernet from the eastern Pope Valley lends an undertone of basso-profundo black-fruited purity, while a pinch of Merlot from cool Carneros adds middle-palate roundness and pretty and herbaceous aromatic nuance.

Deep inky purple in the glass, out to a ruby-magenta rim. Powerfully ripe black currant and blackberry aromas immediately effuse out of the glass, followed by sage and violet notes. Full-throttle, rich, oozing with dark plum, Bing cherry compote, and mountain blueberry, balanced by bittersweet baking chocolate, hints of woodsmoke, and graphite. Bordeaux-esque firm tannins are buttressed a refreshing acid surge, but with plenty of polish. The finish goes on and on a good 30-45 seconds. It will offer tons of pleasure out the gate, but powerful tannins will mellow by the early 2020s, and it will continue to shine in the late 2030s.
