Rare 120 Year Old Vines Perched Atop Mt Veeder

This is it, exceptional single vineyard Zinfandel, from a great producer and legendary vineyard. Seghesio Zinfandel from the Monte Rosso Vineyard, a very special site atop Mount Veeder described by Robert Parker as “one of Sonoma’s iconic vineyards”.  Here, vines planted in the 1890s grown 1000 feet elevation provide miniscule yields of incredibly powerful Zinfandel fruit, resulting in a wine of wonderfully sumptuous richness. Having sat quietly in the winery’s cellars, this 2013 is in prime condition. 

First planted in 1880, the Monte Rosso Vineyard hugs iron-rich Sonoma-facing slopes on Mount Veeder at 1,000 feet in elevation. Amazingly, some of the vines planted on St. George rootstock survived the devastating phylloxera epidemic, and are still producing fruit. Cooling breezes from San Pablo Bay help mitigate ripening, as temperatures are 10-15 degrees cooler than on the valley floor.

The Seghesio story is straight out of 19th-century folklore. Edoardo Seghesio left Piedmont, Italy, in 1886 and settled in the Italian Swiss Colony nestled in Sonoma County. In 1893, Edoardo wed Angela Vasconi, the niece of the Colony’s manager. Two years later, the couple purchased 56 untouched acres in northern Alexander Valley, planting their first Zinfandel vines along with a few Italian varietals. Five generations of Seghesios would continue the proud family tradition on the “red mountain.” Don’t miss this amazing bottling from this storied site.
