Broad Shoulders, “Extreme” Concentration … Yet Bone Dry
We first met Ry Richards over lunch at Angèle’s in the summer of 2010. Our host was Phil Titus, the winemaker who has been crafting Chappellet’s titanic Pritchard Hill Cabernets for more than two decades. Phil is soft-spoken, but in offering advice to his assistant winemaker, Titus refused to candy-coat the obstacles that confront most Napa Valley startups. His protégé was preparing his first release of Sueño Profundo, and Phil hoped WineAccess might provide Richards with a much-needed cash-flow jumpstart.
We struck our first deal with Richards a few months later for several hundred cases of three 2009 Sueño Profundo Cabernet Sauvignons. Each lot was just 6-10 barrels. The first was drawn from a perfectly exposed, west-facing perch on Howell Mountain, next door to Cimarossa and O’Shaughnessy. Another hailed from a steep slope at 2,000 feet in elevation, nearly the top of Diamond Mountain. Those 2009s lit up the WineAccess scoreboard like never before, as buyers dished out 252 perfect 5-star ratings for what was the highest-scoring debut in website history.
As we would learn at a followup lunch at Angèle’s in late 2014, the 2013 Sueño Profundo “Reserve” would catapult Richards’ cult winery to new heights. Ry poured this massively concentrated yet laser-like Cabernet Sauvignon into three oversized Riedel stems. Then we spent three hours nursing this broad-shouldered 2013, sipping and swirling as the wine effortlessly shed its baby fat, slowly uncovering the lavish structure of The Wine Advocate’s “greatest vintage in 37 years.”
The 2013 Sueño Profundo Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is a wine of fascinating contrasts. While finished alcohol is a lusty 14.9%, there is no sense whatsoever of heat. Concentration is so extreme that one can’t help but wonder if residual sugar levels aren’t above the perceptible 2 grams/liter. Yet, on analysis, Richards’ 2013 “Reserve” is absolutely dry! Saturated purple in color, infused with dense, finely delineated layers of black-fruit preserves, crème de cassis, violets, graphite, and a hint of new-wood cedar. The finish is textbook — sturdy yet supple tannins arguing cogently for 10-15 years of cellar slumber!
