245 Perfect 5-Star Ratings: Château Turcaud Entre-Deux-Mers
![]() |
In four consecutive vintages, it’s been the top-rated white wine bargain on WineAccess. But for climatic reasons that would be explained to us in detail by the venerable Maurice Robert, the 2014 vintage may well be the finest in the history of Château Turcaud.
Spring was warm and dry, making for a healthy set for both Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Flowering came early in the first week of June, typically suggesting an early September harvest. Then the meteo turned on a dime. July was cold and wet, as was August. When Maurice’s daughter and son-in-law, Isabelle and Stéphane Le May, returned from their pre-harvest vacation, they went right to work, dropping fruit aggressively so as to spike maturity — a last sprint to the harvest finish line.
Admittedly, this isn’t a one-size-fits-all vintage. Those who didn’t conduct green harvests and were less maniacally focused on the late-season hygiene of their vines put out solid whites. But, for the most meticulous white wine growers of Bordeaux, 2014 is a vintage for the ages, making for rich, beautifully textured Sauvignon and Semillon, braced by stinging natural acidity.
Since the late 1970s, Château Turcaud Entre-Deux-Mers has been featured at 3-star Restaurant Taillevent in Paris, where we first discovered it. In the 2010-2013 vintages, Maurice Robert’s scintillating white has outpointed every white wine in WineAccess history, earning a record 208 perfect 5-star ratings and reviews. Still, by all accounts — including those of Monsieurs Robert and Le May — this release from the miracle 2014 growing season takes Château Turcaud to unprecedented heights.
The 2014 Château Turcaud Entre-Deux-Mers is pale gold/green. Exotic aromatically, featuring a sleek, mineral combination of quince, apple, anise, and pear. Unusually rich and weighty, juicy and compact, finishing with mouthwatering acidity and vibrancy. Typically, Turcaud Entre-Deux-Mers hits its peak three years after bottling. Not in 2014. Drink now-2022. This is a beauty.
