Overachiever by a Côte de Beaune Master

Overachiever by a Côte de Beaune Master

In Burgundy’s prestigious Côte de Beaune — the home turf and origin of some of France’s most prized Chardonnay wines — the best winemaking is artisanal and site-specific. Just south of Beaune in the village of Chassagne-Montrachet, few grower names command more respect than the Colin family’s. In addition to the world-class Premier Cru bottlings Bruno Colin turns out from a patchwork of tiny vineyard parcels, the wine he produces under his Bourgogne Blanc label — such as this 2014 gem — represents one of the world’s great Chardonnay values.

Working from 19 acres of vineyards, Bruno Colin has strung together vintage after successful vintage of pristine white Burgundy since 2004. The year before, his parents retired from the celebrated Domaine Colin-Deléger, handing over their diverse vineyard holdings in and around Chassagne-Montrachet to Bruno and his brother, Philippe. Bruno farms 30 separate parcels spread across five communes, an impossibly complicated grower situation that is nonetheless quite typical in the Côte d’Or.

Less common is Bruno’s terroir-driven commitment to making aromatic and well-balanced White Burgundy that lives up to the great Chassagne reputation — and to his family name.

A temperature-controlled fermentation preserves the floral and fruity characteristics of his Chardonnay, while minimal bâtonnage, or lees-stirring, along with aging 10 months in 15% new oak results in a rich, precise and mineral-driven white. We can say with confidence that this beautiful 2014 fits right into Bruno’s stylistic wheelhouse.
