What Happens When a Winery Waits for Perfection
The 2014 Ferreira Late Bottled Vintage is one of the single most exciting Ports the Wine Access Judging Panel has tasted in a long time. Not only was it held by Ferreira until it was perfectly mature, but it also offers an almost incomprehensible value: We’re offering bottles of this intense, complex wine that gushes with black fruit, cocoa, ginger, and pepper here for less than the price of two glasses at a restaurant.
Wine Access members who are familiar with Ferreira won’t be surprised by the incredible quality: The house itself traces its roots back to 1751 (yes, it’s older than the United States itself!), and its current owner, Sogrape Vinhos, was named the Best Winery in the World by the internationally renowned World Association of Writers and Journalists of Wines and Spirits.
All of that history and passion come through in every sip, and sommeliers around the country are currently trying to get as much of it as they can as the holiday season approaches: On its own or alongside cheese or dessert, this is a wine to remember.
It’s crafted from a traditional blend of Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, and Tinta Cão, and in the five years since the pristine grapes were harvested, it has evolved into a wine of depth, length, and impeccable maturity.
Even among the range of Late Bottled Vintage on the American market, this one is a standout. Unlike Vintage Port, which is released decades before it’s typically ready, LBV is held by the winery itself until they feel that it’s reached its peak. And the 2014 Ferreira embodies everything that makes the style so increasingly popular among somms and collectors alike: Generous fruit, sappy tannins, and depth to spare.
Finding a wine that’s been held back by the producer until it’s perfect is a rarity. And having access to one at a price like this is practically unheard-of.
