A Family Affair Since 1935
Champagne Fluteau is a family affair. That’s how it’s been since its founding by Emile Hérard and his son in law, Georges Fluteau, in 1935.
Today this domaine in southern Champagne’s Aube region is run by the fourth generation: winemaker Jérémy Fluteau, his wife Mathilde Bertillon, and Adeline Fluteau, Jérémy’s sister. All wines here are estate-grown; They purchase no grapes and they farm in an environmentally sustainable way, gaining HVE certification for their efforts in 2017.
The Symbiose cuvée is composed of 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir, all from the house’s estate vineyards in Gye-Sur-Seine, the southernmost sector of the Champagne appellation. The name refers to the symbiosis between Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, how they complement one another in the blend. This wine is treated to an exceptional SEVEN years on the lees, an optimal aging period for a vintage wine that helps it develop complexity and refinement.
Champagne’s 2014 season started like it was strapped to a 503-horsepower M3: A warm, dry spring set up a big, healthy crop, and growers were wearing grins—until a damp summer pumped the brakes. Hard. By late August, vignerons from Reims to Oger were chomping their fingernails. Only a gorgeous September could deliver on the season’s early promise—and four four weeks of sunshine did exactly that.
The result is one of our favorite vintages of the decade—one that balances power with elegance and vibrancy like few others.
This wine is so pure, gentle, and balanced that you may find it hard to put your glass down. The wine embodies all the best traits of the excellent 2014 vintage: It is vibrant, pure, and best of all, classically-styled Champagne.
