Wine Spectator’s “Harmonious” 2012 Barolo: A World-Class Red Under $35

Since the start of the new millennium, winegrowers of Barolo have experienced a number of extraordinary years, including the finely delineated 2001, the classically structured 2004, 2006, and 2008, and the sumptuous 2010. But if we had to pick one vintage that offered up the juiciest, most pliant, and plush Barolos — Barolos that more than any vintage in memory take a page out of a seductive Burgundian script — it would be 2012.

Those drinking most beautifully out of the gate come from the warmer, clayey soils of La Morra in its northern area, made famous by the names of Voerzio, Scavino, Silvio Grasso, and Revello. For those of you who have feasted on the more racy and forward “crus” from superstar Carlo Revello, its Revello’s 2012 Barolo that ranks among the most stunning under-$35 Barolos we’ve tasted since the release of his 2007s.

We loved this wine, as did Wine Spectator, who awarded Revello’s “harmonious” Barolo 93 points — making it the #1 2012 under-$35.

If you’re a Pinot Noir enthusiast or a serious Côte de Nuits collector, the cream of the 2012 Barolos are must-buys — fetching no less than $70/bottle. But if you’re looking for world-class BARGAIN reds, it doesn’t get much sweeter than this.

Carlo Revello’s 2012 Barolo is deep ruby-red to the rim. Seductive aromas of ripe cherry, plum preserves, sweet spice, and leather, refined by hints of new wood and mint. Soft and pliant on the attack, with a vigorous, ripe core of crushed red and black fruits, licorice, and mocha. Framed by firm, sweet tannins into a persistent finish, making this 2012 Fratelli Revello Barolo irresistible now and waiting to build complexity well into the mid-2020s.
