A Decade Works Magic on Bordeaux

A decade works magic for Bordeaux. It transforms wines both humble and grand into more full, expressive, thrilling versions of themselves, and the years have certainly cast their spell on the 2014 Gazin Rocquencourt.

Made by Michel Rolland and one of the most ambitious families in Bordeaux, it was absolutely delicious on release—Antonio Galloni noted its “striking upfront sexiness” and a “dark, succulent personality and soft contours.” The intervening years have allowed it to blossom to its fullest potential.

Gazin Rocquencourt dates back to the 1660s, and for much of its life was known as an under-the-radar source for solid wines, located in close proximity to more famous estates like Malartic Lagravière. But when the Bonnie family bought Gazin Rocquencourt in 2006, everything took off.

They poured money into the estate, modernizing the cellar and the vineyards. They brought on legendary consultant Michel Rolland to optimize the winemaking protocols and make use of their new gravity-flow winery. Rolland started to vinify the wines parcel by parcel, which allowed for careful, fine adjustment in technique, then he’d make his blending decisions even more selectively.

Gazin Rocquencourt quickly established a reputation as one of the best buys in pricey Pessac-Léognan, but that reputation wouldn’t last long: In 2020, the château and its vineyards were folded into Château Malartic Lagravière. The estate is also owned by the Bonnie family, but its wines are over twice as expensive.

That makes this library vintage of Gazin Rocquencourt a rare treat. They absolutely nailed the 2014 vintage—a year we adore for its classical stylings—and it will deliver big for you over the next few years.
