Magnums For Less Than a Regular Bottle? Yes.

Founder Bill Price’s Pinot Noir credentials include Kosta Browne, Kistler, Lutum, and Gary Farrell wineries, but at Head High, he and his partner Sam Spencer turn out some of the juiciest and most satisfying red blends we have tasted. Consisting of Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Malbec, and a sprinkling of other varieties, the 2014 Head High Red Blend wine is ripe and concentrated, and in magnum format, is our definition of a grilling season no-brainer.

History suggested that the magnum of 2014 Head High Red Blend — like every wine we have tasted from Head High — would pass our tasting panel with flying colors. But rules are rules, so we took them up on their offer to send a magnum to our office in Napa for evaluation. It also hadn’t escaped us that one of us would have the chance to spend a sunny wine country weekend field-testing the voluptuous red alongside a grill full of Prime ribeyes.

The 2014 Head High Red Blend, composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Malbec, Tempranillo, and other dark-fruited red grapes, is sourced partially from Bill Price’s coveted Durell Vineyard and winemaker Sam Spencer’s Madder Lake plot, and has precisely everything we want in a spring and summertime grill wine: It is rich and dense, with a sturdy tannic backbone, smoothed out by 10 months in French oak. It is complex enough to keep you intrigued at every sip, but juicy enough to be gulped down without ceremony. Most importantly, the 1,500 mL bottle is big enough to attract friends, and to serve as a hedge against coming up short.

Head High is showing real love to Wine Access clients by offering magnums for more than 30% off SRP. There is simply no good reason not to stock up for season. You — and the friends who seem to materialize whenever a magnum is uncorked — will be glad you did.
