Hidden Ridge's Other California Classic
Hidden Ridge's Other California Classic
If you’re a fan of classic, opulent California Estate Chardonnay, don’t count on seeing a better deal than this Wine Access exclusive: the 2014 Hidden Ridge Chardonnay Sonoma County.
Why is this price possible? Quite simply, because Hidden Ridge’s Cabernets, produced by 100-point winemaker Tim Milos (of Opus One, Cliff Lede, and Stag’s Leap), are too high-scoring and too profitable, so the Chardonnay vines must make way for Cabernet. This means that the 2014 Hidden Ridge Chardonnay vines, grown in the sandy, volcanic soils of the Hidden Ridge estate, have been replanted to Cabernet, and the 2014 vintage will be the last to wear the Hidden Ridge label.
We claimed every last bottle, and are thrilled to offer this estate Chardonnay—crafted by a 100-point winemaker—at a stunning 60% off! This is not a deal for the far-sighted. This wine has been cellared, and it is ready for the fast-actors who want to enjoy a few cases of opulent, round and rich Chardonnay now and over the next year. Winery SRP of $45, but offered at $17.99 on a case or more for Wine Access friends, shipping included on 8 bottles.
Hidden Ridge, set amidst Mayacamas mountain terrain so remote and rugged, can only be accessed via four-wheel-drive trucks and helicopters. This special plot exists in a land of extremes on the Sonoma County side of Spring Mountain, 1,700 feet above sea level, where the vines search deep into the sandy loam and volcanic basalt, and where the slopes are steep enough to make you double-check that your boots are flat on the ground. The vineyards are, by necessity, tended only by hand. The site is located above the fog line, where the grapes are treated to mountaintop sunshine and stiff cooling breezes.
It’s truly one of the most breathtaking vineyards we’ve laid eyes on in Northern California, and the bittersweet fact is that it is such a smashing site for Cabernet that Chardonnay is getting the boot. So if you are looking for a new favorite Chardonnay to buy year in and year out, we truly wish we could help you out. But if you want to enjoy a fantastic Chardonnay at price that stretches credulity, this is your chance. Full of ripe peach, apple, and Meyer lemon, this is a round and buttery Chardonnay that is worth every penny of its $45 SRP. Today, it is $17.99 per bottle on a case or more. Honestly, we can’t think of a good reason to buy any less than that.
