The Red Wine Robert Parker Calls a “Legend in the Making”

There are precious few sites as perfect for Cabernet Sauvignon as the Hidden Ridge Vineyard. And while the name recently changed to Immortal Estate, the wine and the quality are every bit as magnificent as they were when the winery received its first 100-point score.

We’re happy to share Immortal’s 2014 Slope Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine that bursts with the density and complexity of the Hidden Ridge releases that have disappeared on Wine Access and garnered some of the best customer reviews in our history. These are the final bottles of the 2014 Slope, so don’t sleep on this limited time offer. Shipping included on two or more.

The 2014 Immortal Slope Cab earned 95-97+ points from Robert Parker himself, who wrote that “its riveting richness, concentration, texture, and density represent another legend in the making. Crème de cassis, licorice, blackberry, earthiness, and spice are all present in this magnificent example of Cabernet Sauvignon that should age beautifully for 25-30+ years.”

Crafted by 100-point winemaker Timothy Milos, this Immortal Slope packs a fantastic growing season into a dense, expressive Cab that we can’t recommend highly enough—one that deserves room in the cellar next to your finest Bordeaux and Napa Cabernets.

Up a twisting, jagged path, this special plot exists in a land of extremes on the Sonoma County side of Spring Mountain, 1,700 feet above sea level. Here the Cabernet vines search deep into the sandy loam and volcanic basalt that make up the slopes, which are steep enough to make you look over your shoulder at the abyss below, and double-check that your boots are flat on the ground.

When I took my first trip to see this special vineyard,” proprietor Tim Martin told us, “I saw something that looked like it was out of Europe. With a 55-degree slope, it represented something that was just not done anymore and allows us to get fruit profiles you really can’t find here. You aren't allowed to plant anymore on these types of steep hills.”

The unique site, out of necessity, is tended only by hand, and that effort has yielded a wine of haunting power and grace. Its blackberry and blueberry notes are complicated by unforgettable nods toward lavender, pie spice, cedar, and five-spice, all of it wrapped up in a robust, powerful package that promises medium- to long-term evolution. Wineries are proud to present this kind of Cabernet terroir and quality at two and three times the price.

Parker has called these wines “clearly world-class Cabernet Sauvignons” that “should be considered by any serious collector for their cellars.” We heartily agree with him.

The new name of this revered producer is perhaps more accurate than the old one: Wines like this are built to be immortal, and their reputation certainly will be. Either way, the word is getting out. The Cabernets from this remarkable vineyard won’t remain hidden for long.
