A New Peak for One of the Country’s Best

Iron Horse is a benchmark producer for American sparkling wine, and the 2014 Classic Vintage Brut is a show-stopper.

And Iron Horse has most consistently offered the best bang for the buck of sparkling wine enthusiasts, and received the most effusive praise from the top critics: Even Jancis Robinson has lauded it as “top-quality.” Wine Enthusiast rated the 2014 94 points, raving about its “high-toned acidity and restrained richness.”

We loved its fresh-baked toast and marmalade notes, as well as its brilliant food-friendly structure—from Sunday brunch to roast chicken, it will raise any meal to the stratosphere. At $40 per bottle ($5 less than the winery itself sells it for) the Iron Horse Classic Vintage Brut is  easily one of the top values in high-end bubbly on the market.

Emblematic of classic American sparkling wine, Presidents have served Iron Horse at the White House since the 1970s, from the Reagan-Gorbachev summits to the turn of the millennium. But unlike so many of the best sparkling wines around the world, the 2014 Iron Horse Classic Vintage Brut is priced to be enjoyed in far more casual settings, too. In that regard and so many others, it’s the quintessential American bubbly, and proof that sparkling wine from California can compete with the very best in the world.

This one in particular boasts all the complexity and finesse of the best of Champagne, but in a distinctly Californian style. The blend of 72% Pinot Noir and 28% Chardonnay is grown in the magnificent Green Valley appellation, just 13 miles from the Pacific. There, the family’s 160 acres of vines are broken up into 39 individual blocks, each of which is sustainably farmed and vinified separately, the better to understand each piece of the estate and ensure consistently excellent quality.

The winery was founded by Audrey and Barry Sterling in 1976, and today, more than 40 years later, it’s still owned by the family. Three generations now live on the estate, and all of their wines are a deeply personal expression of their passion for the land.

Incredibly, the quality keeps on getting better at a price that makes stocking up an easy decision.
