The Glory of Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs
Champagne's 2014 season started like it was strapped to a 503-horsepower M3: A warm, dry spring set up a big, healthy crop, and growers were wearing grins—until a damp summer pumped the brakes. Hard Only a gorgeous September could deliver on the season's early promise.
September came, and with it four weeks of sunshine—exactly what the vines needed. The top houses were ebullient: Krug planned on bottling their $1,000 Clos du Mesnil. Ditto Roederer, Philipponnat, and Taittinger with their têtes de cuvées.
At Legras & Haas, the family-owned Champagne house in the Grand Cru village of Chouilly, had everything they needed to craft a beautiful 2014 Les Sillons, which took home 96 points from the Decanter World Wine Awards.
For four generations, the Legras family had worked the chalky soils of Chouilly, the northernmost Grand Cru village in the Côte des Blancs. When François Legras married Brigitte Haas in 1991, they established their own Champagne house. Now their sons Olivier, Rémi, and Jérôme tend 18 hectares across 35 parcels in Chouilly—each offering its own expression of Chardonnay.
Les Sillons, their single-vineyard flagship, comes from their prime vineyard holdings, and the 2014 showcases everything that makes their village of Chouilly special: crystalline minerality, electric acidity, and that distinctive Grand Cru depth. After fermenting in stainless steel and aging on the lees, the wine developed layers of brioche complexity while maintaining its precision. Now it’s showing just phenomenally.
Just 54 cases were imported of this grower Blanc de Blancs, crafted from 100% estate-grown Chardonnay by a family with Champagne in their blood. We’re thrilled to share it with you.
