“A World-Class Cabernet Sauvignon”
“A World-Class Cabernet Sauvignon”
Opening a bottle of Michel Rolland’s own Napa Cabernet Sauvignon comes with a certain level of anticipation. After all, this is the man who steered to greatness Bordeaux châteaux such as Angélus, Ausone, Pavie, and Pontet-Canet, as well as iconic Napa estates such as Bond, Bryant Family, Harlan, and Staglin.
After being totally blown away by the 2013, we were more than eager to see what the 2014 would deliver. Once again, Michel left us astounded — immense concentration, complex layers, svelte and fine French oak, and a powerful finish. On top of that, sheer and utter beauty: Such ethereal perfume and impressive structure is uncommon in what is essentially a cult Napa Cabernet.
Whether Pontet-Canet, Harlan, or Ornellaia, Rolland’s influence can always be appreciated in the perfect balance of generosity and complexity, both aromatic and textural. Three decades of experience with Napa terroir have Rolland convinced that Napa is second only to France as a source of great wines. Together with winemaker Jean Hoefliger of Alpha Omega, he’s crafted a fine addition to the Napa Hall of Fame with this 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon.
This 2014 vintage is Rolland’s best Napa Cabernet yet. 2014 was a such a great vintage for extraction, smaller berries across the board, thus the 30% decrease in production across the valley, but better juice to skin ratio meant that he didn’t need to put the skins and juice together as long. Past vintages have been around 70-90 on the skins but the 2014 was around 60 days. The wine was fermented with native yeast in barrel, the tops were popped back on the barrel and the skins and juice left in contact for another 45 days. The wine went into a 80% new barrel program for another 22 months. Michel decided to ship 100 cases to Bordeaux, therefore we have even fewer bottles to sell than we did of the 2013.
Ready to be enjoyed now, or as Parker says, over the next “20-30 years.” So pull a few corks this year, and next, and stash a few bottles in the cellar to savor at different stages. This is serious collector’s Cabernet.
