A “Supremely Graceful” 98-Point Cab - Decanter

A “Supremely Graceful” 98-Point Cab - Decanter

Some Napa Cabernet Sauvignon producers focus on extracting the maximum amount of color, tannin, and power from each and every one of the grapes that arrives on their crush pad.

That’s not how Philip Togni does things.

Even in vintages that have the potential to produce super-ripe wines with lots of alcohol and brawn, his training and overall philosophy just won’t allow him to do that. Instead, he keeps his focus on wines of stunning detail, on bottles that express the vintage and his lovingly tended vineyard on Spring Mountain with clarity and precision.

In 2014, he hit a home run. In its 98-point review, Decanter praised the wine’s “beautifully complex bouquet of plum, black cherry, clove, sweet tobacco, cocoa nib and hints of mountain laurel,” calling it “a supremely graceful Cabernet and a worthy successor to the profound 2013.” Other critics followed suit: Vinous called it “a wine built on energy and aromatics that won't hit its stride until at least age ten.” Wine Advocate swooned over its “beautiful quiet intensity and great freshness.” The raves rolled on and on.

We couldn’t agree more: This is a wine that showcases both a producer at the top of his game and a vintage that played right into his skills. It’s a deeply memorable wine, whether you drink it now (after an hour in the decanter) or in a couple of decades.
