100% Cabernet From Rarified Corner of Rutherford
100% Cabernet From Rarified Corner of Rutherford
This 2014 Sojourn Cellars Napa Cabernet, which comes from the hallowed “F-Block” of the legendary Beckstoffer Georges III in Rutherford earned 95 points from Robert Parker Wine Advocate. From this prized section of vines in one of Napa Valley’s most historic vineyards, the wine delivers “crème de cassis, baked blackberries, [and] dark chocolate” notes, says The Advocate. In its 94-point review, Wine Enthusiast hails Sojourn’s “substantial density and ripeness,” and that richness and opulence is only going to develop gorgeous complexity and nuance over time. This eminently approachable beauty will wow today and will astound in a decade. Just 25 cases up for grabs.
If there’s an estate in Napa Valley to associate with the rise of one of the world’s preeminent wine regions, it’s the Beckstoffers’ heritage property, Georges III Vineyard. Planted in 1895, it boasts a fantastic lineage: The 300-acre parcel was purchased by Beaulieu Vineyards’ founder Georges de Latour in 1928 and for decades provided BV’s legendary winemaker, André Tchelistcheff, with the Rutherford fruit that helped him put Napa Valley on the international wine map.
Fast forward to 2008, when Sojourn Cellars’ co-founders Craig Haserot and Erich Bradley began to access grapes from the vineyard’s sought-after F-Block. They’ve since laid the groundwork for a tiny-case production of definitive Rutherford Cabernet. Via open-top fermenters and hand punch-downs, winemaker Bradley’s take on Georges III involves minimal manipulation of Cabernet fruit grown at the unique site. In the drought-influenced 2014 vintage, this resulted in a wine of extraordinary purity, concentration, and approachability.
Although Sojourn is best known for producing world-class 95-point Pinot Noirs from Sonoma Coast, they have produced exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon since their inception. So, when a house like Sojourn shifts their gaze over the Mayacamas Mountains to Rutherford, it can have a spectacular result — as we are seeing with this wine. When the Sojourn partners decided nearly a decade ago to expand their already-acclaimed portfolio and work with one of Napa Valley’s most prestigious vineyards, they added a page to the Beckstoffer Georges III history.
