Few will have the opportunity to acquire this sublime Bordeaux-blend from Gonzague Lurton and Claire Villars-Lurton’s Chalk Hill estate — a stone’s throw from 100-point-hoarding Verité. With only Only 450 cases produced, this is allocated to winery visitors and Wine Access clients only. The Lurton’s custodianship of Classified Growth Châteaux Durfort-Vivens and Haut-Bages Libéral and Chalk Hill’s distinctive volcanic soils, results in the 2014 Trinite Estate "Amaino" Sonoma County Red Wine, Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend that boasts a distinct Bordeaux-like cut and mouthfeel, savory herbal notes, and remarkable polish.

The Lurton family is so steeped in Bordeaux Grand Cru winemaking that they could make wine anywhere in the world. So it speaks volumes that Gonzague Lurton and Claire Villars-Lurton selected a 24-acre parcel at the nexus of cool Russian River Valley and warmer Alexander Valley as a California home base for their Margaux-inspired blends.

The Chalk Hill Winery’s classic and defining wines put the Chalk Hill AVA on the map, their lofty standard luring other ambitious winemakers to the region. The unique climate and volcanic soils have established the Chalk Hill AVA as one of the sacred sites for Bordeaux varietals in California, where winemakers strive for sleek Bordelaise blends to rival the very best of the Left Bank.

At Trinité, Gonzague and Claire produce a compact hierarchy of three wines, with their beautiful flagship “Acaibo” justly earning most of the accolades. But at our recent tasting, we zeroed in on the 2014 “Amaino,” a drink-now California beauty with distinct Bordeaux cut available at a surprisingly reasonable price.

Farmed organically in a natural amphitheater, this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot achieves perfect ripeness and balance through warm afternoons and foggy nights. The latest in a string of stellar vintages, 2014 produced an “Amaino” that is supple out of the gate, softened by 18 months in 80% new French Oak.

Apologies in advance to those who miss out on this Chalk Hill beauty.
