Few Can Do Better In Santa Barbara

Few Can Do Better In Santa Barbara

After awarding 92 points to Jim and Bob Varner’s single-vineyard 2014, making it his #1 2014 American Chardonnay under $30, Antonio Galloni raved: “Despite its very reasonable price, the 2014 Chardonnay El Camino Vineyard delivers serious intensity, richness and nuance.” Then he went one step further, adding, “This is one of the most singular Santa Barbara Chardonnays readers will come across.” As The Wine Advocate wrote, “Few winemakers do Chardonnay and Pinot Noir better than brothers Jim and Bob Varner.” This is the Varner signature — one that’s netted them an incredible 16 reviews of 95 points or more from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate — and it’s on full display here.

In the spectacular 2014 growing season on the Central Coast, one in which barely a drop of rain fell between June and the end of August, daytime highs hung in the low 80s, while nighttime lows dipped into the 50s. The Varners took full advantage. Fruit from the 2.3-acre El Camino Vineyard ripened to cool-climate perfection, and the result was an elegantly broad and rich Chardonnay combining dense New World opulence and succulent apple-honey concentration with firm coastal backbone.
