Chateaux Margaux, Cos d’Estournel, and Bollinger Masterminds’ Collaboration
Lazuli Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine lover’s dream come true. Bordeaux superstars Bruno Prats of Cos d’Estournel and the late Paul Pontallier of Château Margaux teamed up with Chile’s preeminent winemaker, Felipe de Solminihac, to bring French magnificence to the Maipo Valley’s incredible terroir. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate awarded the 2014 Lazuli 94 points, calling it “especially elegant,” with “very good freshness” and “super refined tannins.” As Parker’s Advocate concluded, “This certainly over delivers for the price.”
2014 was a spectacular vintage in Chile’s Maipo Valley. It was also the last Lazuli vintage blended by the legendary Paul Pontallier, who guided Bordeaux First Growth Château Margaux for 26 years. Pontallier’s signature polish and nuance are written all over the 2014 Lazuli, as evidenced by the Wine Advocate’s review: “Insinuating, rather than in your face...This has great elegance, and should age for a very long time.”
The 2014 Lazuli Cabernet stands tall in the lineup of high-scoring wines crafted by this all-star team. It’s what Prats and Pontallier must have been hoping for when, drawn to a 45-acre tract in the Maipo Valley that had been a renowned viticultural site for over a century, they founded Viña Aquitania in 1990. Stunned by the quality of the terroir, Bollinger’s Ghislain de Montgolfier became a partner in 2003 and the winery has been on a tear ever since.
