Legendary Mountain Estate Napa Cabernet
Legendary Mountain Estate Napa Cabernet
What do you get when you bring together one of the greatest winemaking families in Italian history, a top site on Napa Valley’s Atlas Peak, and a vintage that Vinous described as producing “opulent, voluptuous” wines even while they were still in barrel? The 2015 Antica Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Atlas Peak Napa Valley, a 94-point, estate-grown marvel from one of Napa’s most sought-after sub-AVAs. At $49.99 this swoon-worthy, black-fruited mountain Cab is a smart buy that’s ideal for the cellar and showing remarkable elegance right now.
Currently, ONLY available on Wine Access as we are the first in the country to offer this vintage, and the first to market. This Antica is your chance to skip the years-long waiting list for iconic Atlas Peak Cabernet Sauvignons like those from Kongsgaard, Hesperian, and Alpha Omega—and for a fraction of the price.
The Antinori family—responsible, of course, for Tignanello, Guado al Tasso, and so many more—has been working this site, 1,500 to 1,800 feet high on Atlas Peak, for more than 30 years. For 20 of them, they conducted studies that helped clarify what made it such a standout, even among neighbors like Kongsgaard and Stagecoach Vineyard, part of which is located in the AVA.
Turns out that Antica Estate is nestled in a valley that, because of the natural geology, benefits from a wind-tunnel effect that funnels crisp air from the San Pablo Bay up toward their vines. As a result, those cooling currents allow the berries to develop fully from their sunny, mountaintop location above the fog line without over-ripening. Acids remain fresh, leading to well-structured, vibrant wines that balance New World fruit with European restraint.
James Suckling praised the 2015’s “crystal-clear blue fruit,” and “lively…savory” flavors of oyster shells. We loved it every bit as much and collectively swooned over its notes of olive tapenade, licorice, and garrigue. This kind of complexity makes sense, however, when you realize that the vineyard is being farmed so carefully that each vine only produces enough fruit to fill a single bottle. The Antinori family is clearly willing to sacrifice everything here, even volume and higher profits, in order to allow this amazing land to speak in as ringing a voice as possible.
The 2015 Antica Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Atlas Peak Napa Valley is a vivid example of the incredible diversity of terroirs and micro-climates within America’s most famous wine region, and of the magic that can happen when a producer with vision and generations of know-how comes together with a world-class vineyard site and a vintage that rewards it all.
