Rare Tuscan Red Combines Value with Beauty

It’s not often that you see a 93-point wine carrying an under-$20 price tag. That’s one reason the 2015 Castellani Poggio Al Casone La Cattura IGT is so special. It’s also comprised primarily of Teroldego, a rare Italian grape, and parent of Syrah, which yields rich and complex red-fruited wines that impress for their freshness as much as their depth and length. James Suckling was in awe of the 2015 La Cattura, calling it, “So complex.” His glowing review hailed, “A beautiful wine,” with “an extremely clear and long finish,” showing “red fruit such as cherries and red plums as well as stones, cedar and orange skin.” As under-$20 wines go, the 2015 La Cattura is beyond an overachiever. There is real history and sense of place here — the grape has been cultivated in Italy for at least 500 years. 

If you’ve never had the pleasure of tasting Teroldego, consider what New York Times critic Eric Asimov had to say about the rare grape: “Not to treasure a wine like teroldego is like asking why anyone cares about culatello or guanciale when we already have boiled ham and bacon. Most people won’t care, and that’s fine. But for people who’ve savored the creamy, smooth, delicately porky flavor of a rosy swatch of culatello, the great ham of Emilia-Romagna, it’s a silly question. Of course we need teroldego!”

Teroldego’s under-the-radar status has kept prices in check, while a handful of dedicated Italian producers continue to raise the bar on quality.
