A Superior Sauternes
A Superior Sauternes
Château Coutet, which sits at the northern end of the sweet wine epicenter of Sauternes in the village of Barsac, was classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1855, and has been characterized by Robert Parker as “one of the classics of the region.” Composed of Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and a tiny bit of Muscadelle, the grapes for Coutet are harvested, one-by-one, in ten passes. They are then gently pressed, fermented in 50% new French oak, then aged for 18 months, also in French oak.
The name “Coutet” means knife is the Gascon dialect, and that’s a fine characterization of the finished wine: delightfully sweet, but with freshness, sharpness, and vivacity that make it “a model of elegance and balanced sweetness,” according to Parker, whose Wine Advocate endorsed the 2015 bottling with a stunning 95 points. Enjoy now, or watch it develop over the next three decades.
