Médoc-Like Structure, Warmed to Perfection by the Spanish Sun
Our shipment of Contino’s 2015 Rioja Reserva just arrived—and they might be the most stunning bottles we’ve tasted yet from this historic Spanish producer, the premiere Bordeaux-style estate in the region.
The last two vintages we sold of Contino’s flagship bottling were smash hits, racking up dozens of 4- and 5-star reviews from Wine Access members who loved the harmonious integration and chiseled tannins. Decanting this lurid ruby 2015 for a half-hour, we were floored by its expressive black fruit bouquet, fine-grained tannins, and regal power—the kind of Gran Reserva quality that typically costs $115.
James Suckling called it “a classic Rioja,” pinning on 96 points while praising it as “so tight and focused.” Wine Enthusiast elevated the release to an Editors’ Choice selection with 94 points, a score matched by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.
In 2015, Contino’s coveted estate fruit yielded a captivating Rioja Reserva with the kind of structure that Bordeaux lovers spend top dollar for, combining the angular tannins of a classic Médoc red with the warmth and charm of Spain. Yours today, well below market price.
The last time we visited Contino, we had just finished up en primeur tastings in Bordeaux before hitting the road and making a beeline for La Rioja, speeding along Via San Sebastián. It was fitting that we still had the well-knit, ripe reds of the vintage on our lips as we headed to Contino, the hallowed 16th century estate regarded as a pinnacle of Rioja. A pioneer in the region, Contino modeled itself after the great classified growths of Bordeaux, only using grapes sourced from their own vineyard.
Contino owns more than 150 acres of some of the best terroir in Rioja, located on a bend of the Ebro River. The oldest vines date back to the 1930s; those employed for the Riserva range between 25 and 60 years of age. The soils are alluvial, a mix of pebbles, clay, and sand, similar to what you find in Napa. In the distance, the Cerro de la Mesa stands tall, shielding the vines from damaging winds and providing the site with a unique microclimate that maximizes ripeness.
