Parker’s 25-Year Love Affair Value Gem
Parker’s 25-Year Love Affair Value Gem
Of Burgundy’s Domaine Michel Goubard, Robert Parker has said: “I have had at least 25 years of tasting experience with Domaine Michel Goubard et Fils, one of the first well-made value selections from the Cote Chalonnaise. It continues to make some of the most reliable wines from that region.” This 2015 Domaine Goubard et Fils Bourgogne rewards Parker’s faith, delivering a mouthwatering and vibrant red Burgundy from sustainably managed, 25-year-old vines growing on south-facing hillsides of clay and limestone. A slew of critics agreed that 2015 was an excellent quality vintage, with Decanter declaring that the “Côte Chalonnaise was a great success.” Our savviest clients know a great value, and they know when to make a move. If you’re looking for a classic everyday red Burgundy from an excellent vintage that over-delivers for its modest price, then act now — the 80 cases we secured won’t sit long.
Domaine Michel Goubard, now run by Michel’s sons Pierre-François and Vincent, is a picture of consistency: Growing wine in Saint-Désert in the central Côte Chalonnaise since the 17th century, Goubard has been noted by Robert Parker as “one of the first well-made value selections from the Côte Chalonnaise.” From vintage to vintage, wines like Goubard are known as good values. In exceptional years, they’re known as steals.
Burgundy’s 2015 vintage is widely being hailed as exceptional. Jancis Robinson refers to those “whispering comparisons to the outstanding 2005 vintage.” Fortunately for collectors, what’s good for the Grand Crus — whose prices are especially exorbitant in such a low-yielding year — is good for all of the region. Vinous wrote that “2015 is a great year for village wines,” and “the same goes for basic Bourgogne Rouge bottlings.”
Perched on a south-facing exposure on Mont-Avril, Goubard is steady as a rock, producing top-notch Pinot in highly variable Burgundy. In the challenging vintages, Goubard is a winery to turn to. In the great ones, it’s the winery to run to.
