A 95-Point Snapshot of the New Tuscan Coast
A 95-Point Snapshot of the New Tuscan Coast
When the founders of Duemani, Luca D'Attoma and Elena Celli, refused to send samples of their wine to Napa and insisted on us coming to Italy, we hesitated. As we whipped around hairpin turns and switchbacks along the rugged coastal landscape, we doubted it would be worth it.
But when we tasted the 2015 Duemani Altrovino, well, that’s when we knew our instincts were right. Before we left that afternoon, we had a deal for 600 bottles which have just arrived stateside.
We loved all of their wines that day in Tuscany, but the 2015 Altrovino, a soulful blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc that was partly made in terracotta amphorae, stole the show. James Suckling has praised it as “an extremely focused young wine with blackberry and hints of basil” in his 95-point rave review. Wine Advocate couldn’t get enough of its “wild, untamed” bouquet and aromas of “forest floor, dark berry fruit, grilled herb and scorched earth.” For us, Altrovino embodied Super Tuscan power with shimmering clarity, showing richly complex fruit, a deep sense of terroir, and respect for their iconic vineyards.

No wonder these wines have become so clamored-for among sommeliers and serious collectors: The land here, the sea breezes, the long growing seasons—all of it comes together in this gorgeous part of the Tuscan coast where Luca and Elena set up their winery nearly 20 years ago.
When Luca and Elena insisted we experience their rare, Tuscan reds the way they personally enjoyed them, at the table, alongside a classic Tuscan feast, we shouldn’t have resisted. You shouldn’t resist the chance to taste these bottles stateside, and then plan your own adventure to their hillside estate. We recommend asking for Elena’s wild boar sugo…
