Super Tuscan of Opulence and Beauty

Super Tuscan of Opulence and Beauty

Founded in 1977, Grattamacco is second only to Sassicaia as Bolgheri’s oldest Super Tuscan, blazing the path for Ornellaia, Gaja’s Ca’Marcanda and Antinori’s Guado al Tasso. The 2015 Grattamacco Bolgheri Rosso is an overachiever, delivering incredible pedigree at $29.99 per bottle. I was thrilled with the beauty and purity of this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Sangiovese. So was James Suckling. In his 94-point review, Suckling raved, “Fresh and extremely fine with blackberry and dark chocolate character. Seriously subtle and polished.” 56 cases are available to the quickest of Wine Access clients.

Winemaker Luca Marrone and owner Claudio Tipo (who also owns Montalcino’s famed, perennially high-scoring Poggio di Sotto) can afford to farm their 61 acres of vineyards organically thanks to a distinct maritime-influenced microclimate. The estate sits on a steep hilltop at the end of a long dirt road overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. Nearly 300 days a year, brisk ocean breezes comb the vines as the bright, dry Mediterranean sun beams from above, promoting exquisite ripeness and producing wines of opulence with classical Tuscan structure and rusticity.

Conditions were particularly favorable in 2015, which saw the season off to an early start followed by a late summer full of temperate, dry, sunny days, perfect for the slow evolution and even ripening of grapes. When the call to harvest came on August 28th, the fruit was profoundly concentrated with thick, deeply colored skins. The result in the glass was transcendent: a luscious, dark-fruited wine, primed with a sturdy backbone for long term aging.

Grattamacco typically produces a fraction of the volume of fellow world-class Super Tuscans, making this cuvée all the more difficult to find, sip, and savor. Those with the patience to stash several bottles in the cellar will be rewarded immensely, but as James Suckling put it, this 2015 is “already so attractive.”
