From the Medicis to the Ferragamos

Super Tuscan Big Leagues, Case-Buy Price

When we think of exceptional Super Tuscans, our minds go to the likes of Sassicaia and Ornellaia—two legendary names sporting lofty price tags and high scores to boot. What rarely comes to mind is a $25 Super Tuscan that lands in the high-scoring territory of those aforementioned giants. The 2015 Il Borro Pian di Nova Toscana is one such gem that James Suckling lauded as “full-bodied” and “beautiful” in his glowing 95-point assessment—putting this red-berry fruited, juicy and spicy Super Tuscan in some pretty swanky company.

The 1,750-acre Il Borro estate near Arezzo—owned by Ferruccio Ferragamo, the son of footwear designer Salvatore Ferragamo and Chairman of the luxury goods brand founded by his father—has a regal history, having twice passed through Medici hands before Ferragamo purchased it from Italian royal Duke Amedeo d'Aosta.

After learning its lineage and laying eyes on the estate, it’s no surprise that such a place produces such a lovely wine. In 1993, Ferragamo began renovation of massive scope: He not only replanted the vineyards, but restored the game preserve, the adjacent village, and the roads and bridges that traverse the property’s four river valleys. The results, unsurprisingly, were stunning. Pian di Nova’s first vintage was in 2001, which made it the second wine produced at Il Borro on Ferragamo’s watch.

The Ferragamos’ house on the property has been featured in Architectural Digest, and the estate now has 7,000 olive trees, and rotating crops of wheat, sunflowers, corn, legumes, and lavender, in addition to the 100 acres planted to vine.

Pian di Nova is a blend of Syrah and Sangiovese grown in the property’s sandy, loamy soils. After harvest, both varieties are destemmed and sorted before being vinified separately. After a 10-day fermentation and 20-day maceration, the wine spends six months in tank before being racked to used oak barrels for 12 months. The finished product is juicy and full-bodied, with clove, pepper, and fine tannins—a “beautiful wine,” according to James Suckling, whose 95-point score puts it in the big leagues with some of the most famous names of Tuscany.
