Golden Basin’s Generous Super Tuscan
“You absolutely can't beat this unbelievable value from Tuscany.” That is the unambiguous endorsement from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate of the 2015 La Massa Toscana IGT. Giampaolo Motta has made La Massa one of the greatest Super Tuscan estates, thanks in large part to his hiring Bordeaux legend Stéphane Derenoncourt—who has been called “the world’s hottest winemaker.” Motta and Derenoncourt have outdone themselves with this under-$25 La Massa, which earned 94 points from James Suckling—equal to the score of La Massa’s Giorgio Primo, which commands four times the price at $90! In his review, Suckling praised the 2015 La Massa’s “intense fruit,” “long finish,” and “energy and focus.” Add to this praise, Vinous’ Tuscan crush: “the 2015 vintage presents consumers with a tremendous opportunity to acquire fine, cellar-worthy wines without spending a fortune.”
In Chianti, La Massa sits on hallowed ground—111 acres in the famed Conca d’Oro (Golden Basin). The estate is over 500 years old, and Cabernet Sauvignon has been grown here for the last 400 years. The legendary galestro soils of the Conca d’Oro are strewn with shards of limestone, and add an unmistakable mineral element to the wine. In 1992, when the La Massa estate was listed on the market, Giampaolo Motta was making wine just next door at Castello dei Rampolla. Seizing the opportunity, Motta purchased La Massa and has not looked back. Since then, praise has come fast, often led by Parker’s Wine Advocate, which has hailed the “extreme elegance” of the wines of La Massa, and called it one of their “favorite estates” in Panzano-in-Chianti. For lovers of Old World reds from the classic regions, value and quality don’t often come together like this. When they do, it’s time to make a move.
