Pala Makes “Some Of The Best Wines In Sardinia Today”

Pala Makes “Some Of The Best Wines In Sardinia Today”

Mario Pala’s Stellato Vermentino di Sardegna has wooed Italy’s wine bible, the Rome-based Gambero Rosso, earning the publication’s highest award — Tre Bicchieri (Three Glasses) — for two years running. Critics peg Pala as one of the greatest Vermentino di Sardegna producers, and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate gushes that Pala’s “bold and fruit-forward” Vermentinos are “some of the best wines in Sardinia today.” It’s not often that we are able to offer such a prestigious Italian white at an under-$25 price tag. 50 cases of this delicious, crisp and aromatic Tre Bicchieri beauty are up for grabs.

If you take the long ferry ride from mainland Italy into the middle of the Mediterranean, you’ll want to sample some Sardinian cuisine when you land. But if you want to find out what the buzz is all about — from Gambero Rosso, The Wine Advocate, and beyond — you’ll have to order one of Sardinia’s stellar white wines. If you want the best, it’ll be Vermentino in your glass, and the best of the best is Mario Pala’s Stellato Vermentino di Sardegna.

Pala farms his family’s rolling estate vines organically, which are divided into six parcels to preserve the uniqueness of their varied soils and microclimates. The sand and clay soils that keep a tight rein on the Vermentino’s vigor under the bright sunshine yield bold, expressive fruit of beautiful concentration.

Sardinia’s whites have outgrown their justly deserved reputation as the perfect complement to the cuisine springing from the island’s rocky coastline and rolling pastures. Now, with Pala’s streak of Tre Bicchieri awards, the word is out. We only have 50 cases — don’t say we didn’t tell you.
