American gem that goes toe-to-toe with the world’s top Cabs
This is your chance to claim the 2015 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine revered as one of the finest expressions of Cabernet in the world. With 99 points from Jeb Dunnuck, the sensational, opulent 2015 is another in a string of perfect or near-perfect scores over a decade. From 2001 to 2014, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate rated Quilceda Creek’s flagship Cabernet 98-100 points an astounding 10 times, with four 100-point ratings: more than Scarecrow, more than Bryant, more than Joseph Phelps Insignia! The wines have made five appearances on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list, and the 2012 came in at #2, which further cemented Quilceda’s legendary status among the finest Cabernets in the world. “Full-bodied, deep and layered with an incredible purity and elegance on the palate,” raved Jeb Dunnuck. We have 200 bottles of this iconic Cabernet available at $189.99. They won’t last long.
Quilceda Creek founder Alex Golitzin’s destiny was in his blood. His family was of Russian heritage, but forced to flee to France’s Loire Valley, where he was born. His uncle on his mother’s side was none other than the legendary enologist André Tchelistcheff, who revolutionized Napa Cabernet through his pioneering research into cold fermentation and the use of American oak barrels for aging.
In 1974, Golitzin was living in Washington, working as an engineer for Scott Paper, when his famous uncle came to visit. Golitzin complained he had to drive from outside Seattle to Portland to buy a good bottle of wine. Tchelistcheff told his nephew that he should make wine right there in the Evergreen State, and offered to teach him how to do it. Over the next four years, guided by the his peerless uncle, Golitzin produced one barrel of Cabernet Sauvignon per year, and in 1979 began releasing wine under the Quilceda Creek name. Today, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate calls them “world-class Cabernets that compete with the finest wines from Bordeaux, Napa Valley, Sonoma and the Santa Cruz Mountains.” In 1993, Alex’s son Paul took over as winemaker, having learned from his father just as his father learned from uncle André Tchelistcheff.
2015 proved once again the terrific fruits of that tradition. It was the warmest vintage ever recorded in Washington, the Cabernet ripening under picture-perfect conditions into tiny berries packed with freshness and bright fruit. Composed of grapes from the fine sandy loam soils of the Champoux Vineyard—one of the oldest in the state—as well as three other prized Columbia Valley plots, the wine earns its silky texture from a luxurious 20 months in 100% new French oak.
Like the great châteaux of Bordeaux, Quilceda Creek focuses much of its energy on one wine: This Cabernet is their Grand Vin, and the time to buy it is on release. This is your chance to claim not only Washington’s best Cabernet, but one of the most coveted in the world, for under $200. This wine has 20+ years of life ahead of it. Your future self will thank you.
