A Neighbor and Peer of Poggio di Sotto

One winemaker said Brunello’s 2015 vintage was “made by God." Vinous said, “Fruit has never been more beautiful than it was in the picture-perfect” season.

When you’re talking about a landmark year like that, you can bet that there is, was, and always will be a feverish demand for its wines. So when we learned there were just 48 cases available of San Giorgio’s 2015 Ugolforte Brunello di Montalcino—a property adjacent to the mythical Poggio di Sotto and under the same ownership and winemaking team—we pounced.

Vinous has described Poggio di Sotto as “blessed with truly outstanding Sangiovese terroir.” San Giorgio shares that estate’s gorgeous terroir and vinicultural know-how—so much so that James Suckling awarded each one’s Brunello the same score in 2015.

The properties both sit inside the highly regarded Castelnuovo dell’Abate area of Montalcino. It was on a trip here that we first tasted San Giorgio’s masterful Brunello years ago, paired with braised wild boar shanks. It was an unforgettable combo that left us wondering how Sangiovese could be so dense yet nearly ethereal, outlined by scintillating acidity, and it set us on the path to scoring this fantastic deal.

Originally founded in 1985, San Giorgio holds 14 acres of Brunello vineyards at some of the highest elevations in Castelnuovo: 1300 feet above sea level, where the winds are near-constant and often strong enough to blow the hat off your head. All that fresh Mediterranean air cleanses the 40-year-old vines that put out gloriously rich and concentrated fruit.

A grand hillside terroir. Old vines. Masterful winemaking chops. And the greatest harvest in Montalcino in 25 years? Take it from us: Brunello di Montalcino simply doesn’t get better than this.
