A Tip From Florence

Wine Spectator is one of the most influential wine publications in the U.S. today, covering the top stories in food, wine, and tourism. At least as important are the thousands of reviews and ratings of wines submitted by producers and wine merchants. “Outstanding” wines score between 90 to 94 points, “Classic” wines are rated 95 to 100 points, but only the year’s best earn their way onto Wine Spectator’s annual list of the “Top 100.”

In Italy, the most influential wine publication is Gambero Rosso. Every year, panelists from the lifestyle magazine go through a rigorous blind tasting of roughly 20,000 wines submitted by 2,000 producers hailing from Italy’s 20 regions. Less than 500 wines are awarded Tre Bicchieri or “Three Glasses,” signifying an “Extraordinary” wine.

As Wine Spectator publishes its Top 100 at the end of every year, so Gambero Rosso releases its Tre Bicchieri honors along with nine Vini dell’Anno, the “wines of the year” in nine categories: red, white, sparkling, semi-sweet, dessert, etc. Historically, these honors are bestowed on names like Gaja, Voerzio, and Vietti.

Back on September 30th, a brand manager in Florence told us that Gambero Rosso’s 2017 Bianco dell’Anno will hail from the Marche, known for the Verdicchio grape. At its finest, Verdicchio is distinguished by its rich yet weightless Burgundian-like class and precision. We quickly called our tipster back and locked into every bottle that we could.

Drawn from the estate’s oldest vineyard of almost 9 acres, Tenuta Tavignano’s 2015 Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi “Misco” matures on the lees in stainless steel for a few months, then finishes in bottle for 5 months. Brilliant straw-yellow in hue. Ripe green apples and nectarines burst from the glass, followed by anise, acacia flowers, citrus, and sliced almond, the hallmark of all great Verdicchio of the Marche. Lively and deliciously plump on the attack, but without the weighty mouthfeel of neighboring Verdicchio di Matelica. Intensely mineral and chiseled, finishing with excellent persistence.
