We Let the Food Get Cold
We’re used to getting surprised out on the wine trail—15-seat bistros in Montalcino are good for new discoveries. What we didn’t expect was to find the 94-point Super Tuscan of our dreams right in our own backyard.
But there we were, seated on the patio at The Inn at Tides north of San Francisco, famished after a day at the beach. We ordered heavy—New York sirloin grilled medium-rare with steak-fried potatoes and greens—entrusting the wine pairing to our server. It wasn’t long before the 2015 Quadrimendo came cascading into our oversized stemware.
With ruby-hued brilliance, the 2015 gave off ripe black cherry and blackberry dashed with seductive peppery spice. A sensitivity came through in soft notes of vanilla and milk chocolate, but there was no denying that powerful and juicy dark fruit was playing the starring role. And despite our initial hunger, the sirloin quickly wound up as the sidekick in the pairing.
A tableside Google search revealed 94 points—no surprise there—with Suckling calling the Quadrimendo “A big and rich red with lots of fruit and new wood,” plus a “long, flavorful finish.”
More sips and swirls revealed layers of wet rock and pipe tobacco, and we were back on our phones. The gears were beginning to turn and we had to know who was carrying it and for how much. Around the table every guess was above $50.
As it turned out, nobody had it. A flurry of emails over the next hour (and continued over the next few weeks) led to an exclusive allocation of the 2015 Vitanza Quadrimendo. This stands out as one of Tuscany’s top values, and a perfect choice for a cellar stuffer. Pack this $25 wine in wherever it will fit and drink it now and for years to come.
This gorgeous blend of Merlot and Sangiovese draws its strength and vibrancy from Tenuta Vitanza’s estate vineyards. Spread across Montalcino, the parcels yield structured and electrifying Sangiovese, while the home estate in Torrenieri produces Merlot of incredible lushness and depth.
Rosalba and Guido founded Tenuta Vitanza in 1994 and have been steadily, if quietly, racking up awards ever since. Multiple Tre Bicchieri from Gambero Rosso—Italy’s highest honor—plus international acclaim from the likes of Suckling and Decanter only hint at the greatness these wines show in bottle.
The 94-point Quadrimendo unearths deep Tuscan richness from the first pour to the last, putting on a performance worthy of its original $50 price tag. With today’s deep discount, this exclusive offer should be tops on the list for lovers of bold reds the world over—try finding a 24-month aged, $25 red in Napa. The 100 cases we have up for grabs may seem like a lot, but we guarantee they won’t be enough.
