The most sought-after producers in Napa Valley often grow more fruit than they need, but there’s a short list of those who can get their hands on it—connections, expertise, and critical acclaim are usually required. Possessing these qualities in spades are former Bryant Family assistant winemaker and Philippe Melka protege, Anna Monticelli, and renowned wine broker Kimberly Jones.

Partnered under the name Tether, Jones and Monticelli form a dynamic partnership stacked with winemaking expertise and a deep rolodex of Valley contacts. Robert Parker wasn’t exaggerating when he said Jones represents “many of the best producers” in California; her clients include Blankiet, Clos du Val, Hourglass, Scarecrow, Maybach, O’Shaughnessy, and Ovid, to name just a few. The other half of Tether, Anna Monticelli, provides the winemaking talent. She spent her first vintage at Cheval Blanc, followed by nearly five years under superstar Philippe Melka at Bryant Family as assistant winemaker.

When these powerful forces teamed up, they gained access to parcels from blocks growing right alongside those destined for the elite bottles everyone chases at auction. All that access goes into every drop of the 2015 Tether Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, and for Wine Access clients the chance to secure bottles from our 125-case allocation.

The Wine Advocate gushed over the 2015’s “great freshness,” “layer upon layer of intense black fruits,” We found the dark-berried theme continues on the palate with a spectrum of primary fruit tinged with chocolate, holiday brown spices, and licorice. While extremely concentrated at the core, this Cabernet Sauvignon blend fans out much more plush and silky as expected on the back end. In a blind tasting, most would peg this as another $100 Napa Cabernet—and given its lofty pedigree, it easily could be. At $49.99 each, however, this is an absolute steal.

While an NDA prevents us from disclosing exactly where the fruit for this wine comes from, Monticelli rattled off a list of some of the greatest appellations in Napa as the sources: 45% St. Helena, 35% Oakville, and 20% Oak Knoll. In the cellar, Monticelli put on a clinic, crafting a classic Left-Bank inspired blend comprised of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot, 2% Merlot, 1% Malbec. This is the total package.
