    Normally, Winery-Only…

    Normally, Winery-Only…

Exclusive! Wine Enthusiast “Editors’ Choice” 2015 Vidon Vineyard Mélange Pinot Noir. Normally winery-only, this is a smashing deal from the Chehalem Mountains AVA, and Willamette Valley’s “pinch me I’m dreaming” 2015 vintage. Scoring Mélange isn’t easy in any vintage. Years ago, owner Don Hagge decided that for a winery as small as Vidon, selling through traditional retailers just wasn’t worth it, so he scrapped that model. Most Vidon wines are now sold to visitors to the picturesque estate and through a unique rewards program that the Don, ever the inquisitor, dreamed up himself. Only 350 cases of Mélange were produced, and this is a rare opportunity for Wine Access clients to score this unfined, unfiltered, fleshy, ripe, and red fruit-spiced Pinot. $30 from the winery, only $19.99 on cases at 33% off. Shipping included on 6.

Vidon was founded by Don Hagge and Vicki Lewis, who cleared, and planted the vineyards themselves. Now, Don and winemaker David Bellows—who, like Don, holds a PhD—craft tiny batches of Pinot Noir from an 8.5-acre site, relying on minimally invasive techniques and meticulous attention to detail.

After the 2014 Willamette Valley Pinot Noirs went roaring into the history books as a “vintage of a lifetime,” with Wine Spectator dropping 94- to 97-point ratings on that year’s Pinots, many assumed that the memory of the glorious 2014 vintage would linger. They were wrong. The 2015 growing season all but bumped 2014 from everybody’s mind, and Wine Spectator predicted that 2015 “could be the state’s most extraordinary vintage,” reporting that “there’s no precedent for a vintage exactly like this in Oregon.”

One famous Oregon winemaker went looking for one, and found it, six decades back: His research showed that the same weather conditions that marked the 2015 Willamette vintage also preceded the 1959 Burgundy harvest, which turned out to be “magnificent and long-lived.”

In vintages like 2015, Don Hagge and David Bellows at Vidon do their best to intervene minimally as nature works its magic. They hand-harvest, cold-soak, and ferment the grapes using natural yeasts, all while remaining open to better methods and materials, like glass stoppers and oxygen-permeable tanks. The 2015 Vidon Vineyard Mélange Pinot Noir is a blend of four Pinot clones, grown on the south-west facing slopes of the Vidon estate. Unfined, unfiltered, and aged for 11 months in French oak, the 2015 Melange boasts ripe red fruit, a fleshy mouthfeel, and beautiful spice throughout.
