Melka’s 12 Barrels—The Best Zin You’ll Try All Year

Melka’s 12 Barrels—The Best Zin You’ll Try All Year

The 2015 Aida Estate Zin is one of the most extraordinary bottles of wine from Napa that you’ll ever try. It’s the kind of perfectly-structured red that makes Zinfandel lovers look extremely savvy and even pleases Cabernet diehards with its incredible structure and dark fruit aromatics.

Only 12 barrels of this opulent wine were ever made, and they come from one of the most coveted properties in St. Helena. In the pantheon of iconic Zinfandel, Turley, and Vineyard 29 loom the largest. But only one of them boasts the 100-point winemaking prowess of Philippe Melka, and owners who have spared no expense to make “some of the most sumptuous wines readers will find in Napa Valley,” according to Robert Parker. That would be Vineyard 29.

“Vineyard 29...is one of the top success stories in Northern California,” says Parker, who has called winemaker Philippe Melka one of the top ten consultants in the world. Melka’s Midas touch extends deep, to labels like Lail, Dana Estates, Brand, Davis Estates, Raymond, and beyond.

Every perfect sip of this delicious red, with its plethora of rose petal and bramble aromas, layered with red berries, chocolate-covered espresso beans, vanilla, and winter spice, owes its head-nodding brilliance to a very special plot of land just north of St. Helena: the Aida Estate, acquired by Chuck McMinn in the year 2000. Situated just north of St. Helena, the Aida vineyard is planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel, and was originally helmed by renowned viticulturist David Abreu.

Add to that the gatekeepers of Vineyard 29’s world-class bottlings: First, it was Gary Galleron, then Heidi Barrett (both are Grace Family alums). Then Philippe Melka took over in 1999, working in tandem with Keith Emerson (Gundlach-Bunschu).

The 2015 Aida Zinfandel easily becomes the centerpiece of any dinner table, and our 25 cases are the only ones in the country coming directly from Vineyard 29’s cool, dark cellar in St. Helena.
