For Collectors and the Curious: Historic Hillside Barolo

We fell in love instantly with the 2016 Cavallotto Barolo Bricco Boschis, a majestic Barolo that brims with all the magic of the region, boasts an ultra-rare 99-point score—and stunned us with its unbelievable price.

Even Master Sommelier Sur Lucero, whose taste for Piedmont wines is as fine-tuned as any in the world, was blown away by this authentic, historically significant hillside wine. Majestic and pure, showing wild raspberries, dried red roses, an enticing cigar box layer, and the telltale hint of tar, this is one of the purest and most regal Barolos we’ve had—the kind for which collectors are happy to shell out $200+.

That’s why today’s modest price is such a major deal. Normally this kind of Barolo quality would exclude all but the most ardent and affluent collectors. But at just $85, the Bricco Boschis is an invitation to all fine wine lovers. For anyone interested in sampling a sublime wine from one of the most renowned regions on Earth, this is your chance to taste near-perfection for a rare two-digit sum. Trust us—it’s worth every penny.

Our Wine Team is not alone in their adoration—in fact, there’s critical consensus: Wine Enthusiast’s near-perfect 99-point review calls the Cavallotto a “captivating, delicious wine” and Wine Advocate gave an impressive 98-point review, adding “This is the Castiglione Falletto magic that shows so well in this classic vintage.” Critic Antonio Galloni of Vinous says that “Cavallotto has been on a tear of late,” and if you ask us, this is the bottle that proves it. It’s hands-down one of the finest and most reasonably priced Barolos you’ll find.

Layered, full, and complex, with a mouthfeel full of complex layers of dried cherry and spice with purity and delivery, it’s got tannins hanging on through layers of mineral-rich granite notes that will transport you to the heart of Barolo. Enjoy it young with a long decant (we’re talking hours here), or cellar for the next two decades. Either way, when you decide to indulge, you’ll be reveling in Barolo at its very best.

Five generations of the Cavallotto family have made wine at this 62-acre estate, which in the 18th century was known as Monte della Guardia. Owned by the Countess Juliette Colbert, the Bricco Boschis vineyard is named in honor of her vineyard manager Giuseppe Boschis, who inherited it from her. Today, his heirs Alfio, Giuseppe, and Laura continue to produce the noninterventionist wines that earned this estate a steady and enthusiastic following.

The Cavallotto family purchased this beautiful hilltop property back in 1928 and would later be among the first to make officially registered Barolo in 1948. That long-term, uninterrupted generational knowledge has provided an important level of farming and technical experience that sets this estate apart and keeps the wines so beautifully traditional year after year.

As a result, collectors know Cavallotto well. But today’s nearly perfect 99-point Bricco Boschis is not just poised to deliver them an all-star worthy of the cellar, but also to mint some new devotees out of those who decide to take the plunge into Piedmont’s finest. Opportunities don’t get much sweeter than this one.
