Great Vintages Lift All Boats
There's a version of the 2016 Bordeaux story that gets told over and over: the great châteaux of Pauillac and St.-Julien, the trophy bottles, the prices that climbed accordingly.
It's a good story. Here's a better one:
Deep in the Médoc, in the quiet commune of Saint-Germain d'Esteuil, Château Bois Mondot turned in one of the quiet overachievements of that remarkable vintage—and we picked it up on a recent trip to Wine Paris, where we were reminded exactly why we spend so much time on the wine trail.
Here's the thing about great vintages: they lift all boats, but they lift the hidden gems the most. The top châteaux will be excellent regardless—their winemaking resources, their terroir, their reputation all but guarantee it. But a property like Bois Mondot, with the right soils and a serious team behind it, gets to punch so far above its weight in a year like 2016 that the value equation becomes almost unfair. Almost.
The 2016 growing season was one for the ages, though it didn't look that way early. A waterlogged spring gave way to a brilliantly dry summer, with cool nights that locked in freshness and acidity while the grapes slowly, patiently concentrated. The result across the Left Bank was a vintage of striking balance and precision—and Bois Mondot's clay-limestone soils were built for exactly this sort of season.
Situated in one of the southernmost communes of the Médoc appellation, the estate sits close to the Gironde, where the moderating influence of the estuary is felt most keenly. The vines grow on the Pyrenean gravels typical of the region, with clay-limestone beneath providing natural drainage and steady water supply even through a dry season like 2016. The winemaking follows traditional Médoc methods: rigorous sorting, daily pumping over, careful temperature control, and an extended vatting period.
