Château Marsau Keeps Raising the Bar
An instant sellout last vintage, the 2016 Château Marsau is just as gripping as its predecessor, and has garnered even more critical acclaim. One glass and you’ll understand why Robert Parker mused about Marsau being “the Petrus of the Côtes de Francs.”
We first tasted Marsau at a breezy outdoor two-top in downtown Bordeaux, where our friend, wine broker Guillaume Roy, poured us an introduction. For that, we’d like to express our eternal gratitude—not just for us, but for the Wine Access member who called this 2016 the “top Merlot for the money.”
James Suckling wrote a fantastic 94-point review of the 2016 Marsau, calling it “mouthwatering, pure Merlot.” It’s plush, plummy, and elegantly outlined with the classical structure that we expect to come with a $50+ price tag.
Thanks to our tight-knit connection to this emerging icon of the Côtes de Francs, though, we’ve been able to keep the competition at bay and secure an extraordinary deal. We’ve got it direct from the chilly château cellars, a 94-point jewel that will make a fantastic addition to any collection.
When we took our first sip of Château Marsau, the light, supple tannins and alluring blackberry-edged viscosity mesmerized us—especially when we clarified, at first thinking our French had gone screwy, that we could settle on a price like this.
At Château Marsau, the powerhouse Chadronnier family (one of the region’s most prestigious négociants) grows perfect Merlot vines and gives them the royal treatment under the guidance of 100-point Bordelaise winemaking savant Michel Rolland. The estate’s iron-rich clay soils are eerily similar to those in the Right Bank’s most prestigious appellations, including Pomerol and St.-Émilion. All this contributed to Robert Parker’s conclusion that “Marsau is producing the sexiest, most sumptuous wine in the Côtes de Francs. It is a testament to the perfectionism of its proprietor, Jean-Marie Chadronnier.”
From the cellar to your doorstep, the fruit of Chadronnier perfectionism is world-class Merlot.
