Memories and Fantasies of France, Bottled in Bordeaux

It’s about this time every year when we start dreaming of France. We go every July, catching up with old friends, knocking on cellar doors, walking the galet roulés of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, sifting the dirt of the Premier Cru and Grand Cru hillsides above Aloxe-Corton in our fingers, dining in our favorite open-air cafe on the Place des Vosges...

Sometimes our daydreams take us backward in time, too. To 1982, for instance, and our first sip of Maurice Robert’s stunning blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon at Restaurant Taillevent, Jean-Claude Vrinat's 3-star restaurant in Paris. The warm goat cheese, the toasted walnuts — the memory of the pairing has somehow refused to yield to the passage of 35 years now. Great wine will do that to you.

The same wine we savored that summer evening way back then — the Château Turcaud Entre-Deux-Mers — continues to make memories. From the Taillevent wine list to our own well-stocked cellars, WineAccess members — and more than a few of us here at HQ! — continue to rank Maurice Robert’s mineral white as one of the most electrifying bargains of almost every vintage. We’re happy to report that 2016 lives up to its predecessors. It’s a surefire hit this summer, and many summers to come.

2016 brought a Bordeaux Blanc bumper crop to Entre-Deux-Mers, even for those growers, like Maurice Robert and his son-in-law Stéphane Le May, who dropped fruit aggressively. The Decanter reviewer who, in giving a growing season update, reported “tasting some beautiful aromatic vats in Entre deux Mers” wasn’t kidding: The aromas are top-notch. They taste even better.

The 2016 Château Turcaud is green-tinged straw, brilliant in the glass. Beautifully aromatic, boasting white florals, citrus, and orchard fruit notes, along with hints of anise and quince. Delightfully fruit-forward on the attack — plush, with notes of lemon peel, apple, and pear, along with just a hint of tropical fruit. The finish is driven by bright, mouthwatering acidity. Drink now through 2022.

This perennial favorite, one of the greatest bargain Bordeaux Blancs on our scorecards and those of many WineAccess members, is first-to-market here on WineAccess. By the case ONLY — $168 for 12 bottles, with shipping included on all orders. Take a sip and be transported; the perfect summer white has arrived
