Colgin’s Pritchard Hill Perfection

In the fall, we were honored to receive our first-ever allocation from Napa Valley’s inimitable Colgin Cellars. It was a miniscule amount of Colgin’s 2016 IX Estate, a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend that earned a staggering three 100-point scores from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, Jeb Dunnuck, and James Suckling

Today I’m thrilled to announce that Ann Colgin and our friends at the estate have granted us a little more, straight from their cellars on Pritchard Hill. We’re thrilled to share this all-time great wine with our top Wine Access collectors, but a wine this exquisite is sure to go fast, especially with orders of three bottles coming in original wood cases.

Sourced from Colgin’s estate on Pritchard Hill in one of the finest vintages Napa Valley has ever seen, the triple-100-point 2016 Colgin IX Estate Napa Valley red wine is the product of beautiful conditions, peerless terroir, and perfectionist winemaking. Considering its flawless scores from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, Jeb Dunnuck, and James Suckling, plus the fact that it bears the label of one of the most revered wineries in Napa Valley, one could legitimately ask: Has a wine with a more sterling pedigree ever been produced in Napa Valley?

Pouring a dense and brooding shade of purple, the 2016 IX Estate shows bold fruit aromas of blueberry, black forest cherries, and baked plums, with notes of licorice, mocha, crème caramel, fresh tobacco, and dusty earth. An introverted giant at first, the wine opens up to boast plenty of super-fine-grained tannins and blueberry, blackberry, and toast flavors, and finishes long with hints of earth. This will drink beautifully now (with a two-hour decant, at least), but is primed to thrive in the cellar for three decades or more.

Ann Colgin founded Colgin Cellars in 1992, after a distinguished career in the world of fine art. Colgin’s first winemaker, Helen Turley, set the standard for excellence, and that tradition is now maintained by Director of Winemaking Allison Tauziet.

The IX Estate hails from Colgin’s 125-acre Pritchard Hill property, which overlooks Lake Hennessey and is also home to Colgin’s cutting-edge winery. The vineyard itself consists of 20 acres carved into a hillside, and boasts varied slopes from gentle to steep. Pritchard Hill is known for some of the most precious and characterful soils in Napa Valley, and that shows in this wine: The rocks give it its towering structure and power, while the iron-rich red clay gives it an enveloping warmth and texture. Wine Advocate summed up the result in one word: “Stunning.”

The 2016 Colgin IX Estate is Napa Valley at its very best. We have an extremely limited amount of this flawless wine, and would love to share some of it with you.
