100 Points and a Very Big Deal

It is a BIG deal when Andrea Constanti decides to release a Brunello Riserva. The proprietor of one of the greatest and most historic estates in Brunello, he’s known for impeccably stringent standards. Barely four vintages per decade clear the Riserva bar—and the 2016 is one of the greatest bottles he’s ever produced.

The rarity of these Riservas reflects the incredibly rigorous standards at Conti Costanti. Andrea has been known to resist releasing even a Brunello normale when the harvest doesn’t meet his expectations.

Any potential Riserva must come from a truly exceptional year and possess the sophisticated tannic structure and acidity to last DECADES in the cellar. This 2016, from a vintage heralded as one of finest in Brunello history, received a perfect 100 points from Wine Enthusiast Brunello expert Kerin O’Keefe, who literally wrote the defining book on the region. 

Imagine yourself in Andrea Costanti’s shoes in the early 1980s. Freshly graduated from the University of Siena with a degree in geology, he was contacted one day by Count Emilio Costanti, a doctor and winegrower. The count had no children, and in looking for a successor to take over his winery he had traced the family genealogy to Andrea—the sole living descendant of the Costanti clan, which dates back to the 15th century.

Despite having zero background in wine, Andrea accepted the appointment as the count’s successor and threw himself into the family business. The first Costanti vintage had been released in 1865, but the wines had remained hidden from the public for generations. Count Emilio was the first to commercialize the operation, and Andrea engineered the estate’s brilliant debut on the global market.
