U.S. Exclusive on A High-Toned Tuscan Wonder

“You’ll never be able to find this in the US,” our waiter at Montalcino’s Osticcio told us as he poured this ruby Super Tuscan around the table. “It’s a local favorite, and it never leaves.”

Marco seriously underestimated us. After a months-long quest, we’ve finally brought this Italian stunner home to share, and it’s just as dazzling on American shores as it was alongside Chef Burki’s pillow-soft sweet potato gnocchi and bistecca alla Fiorentina.

A beautifully fresh and high-toned Cabernet, Merlot, and Sangiovese blend loaded with spice, violets, and wild bramble, the 2016 Grignano Pietramaggio is the kind of wine you come home from vacation raving about yet can never find again… until today.

We negotiated a serious bargain: $18 per bottle. Hopefully this isn’t a one-time deal, but you never know, so move today on this exemplary under-$20 Italian red.

Osticcio is renowned for its wine program, so perhaps we shouldn’t have been surprised. When we told the sommelier what we’d ordered for dinner, he ticked off a few wine options: Biondi Santi, Cerbaiona… but what you’ll really want, he said, his eyes flickering over our American clothes, is the Grignano Pietramaggio. It’s dalla terra, he told us—straight from the earth, pure and terroir-transparent. Totally rare for the price.

The vineyards are ancient, dating back to the Roman era. The winery is located in a breathtaking villa constructed in the 15th century and renovated to its current form in the 18th century. In the 1970s, the Inghiramis—a famous fashion family in Italy—took control of the estate, and recently installed the celebrated Stefano Chioccioli as consulting enologist.

Grignano is farmed organically, and the soils are rich in clay and limestone, with the vineyards benefiting from a microclimate and altitude that allow for low-intervention winemaking. All that comes through in the glass, with Pietramaggio’s lifted red berry tones and lively acidity making it the perfect accompaniment for the parade of rich dishes crossing our table.

The day following our meal, we contacted the estate and hammered out this deal, refusing to head to the airport till we had shaken on it. Your new every-night red at $18, easily worth two times the price—and available only to Wine Access members.
