Outstanding Single-Vineyard Pinot Noir
Outstanding Single-Vineyard Pinot Noir
Lange Estate’s rise to greatness mirrors that of the Willamette Valley itself: Over a short period of time, the two have become recognizable names for lovers of Pinot Noir. Wineries like Lange, Oregon’s “Winery of the Year,” embody everything that’s so exciting about the wines from Willamette Valley, producing elegant, cellar-worthy Pinot Noirs that showcase single vineyard terroir and are simultaneously budget-friendly—an oxymoron for most producers.
The 2016 Liberty Bell opens up with mineral-kissed aromas of dried cherries and holiday spice, which precede flavors of cherries, dried cranberries, leather, and brown spice, all delicately structured with tea-like tannins. Sourced from a single block within their famed Freedom Hill vineyard, this is an impressive bottle that oozes with Willamette’s signature fruit-meets-earth flavor combination. You could certainly allow it to age in the cellar for several years, but there’s really no need to: It offers more than enough pleasure right now.
After two great vintages that expressed the more opulent side of Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, 2016 was, in general, a return to elegance and subtlety. The team at Lange Estate has hit another proverbial home run with their 2016 Liberty Bell bottling, with James Suckling raving that it’s “ripe and glossy,” and “enticing,” in his 94-point review. We just called it delicious.
Indeed, the 2016 vintage was the third truly great one in a row in the Willamette Valley, though it produced wines that are quite different from the 2014s and 2015s. According to Wine Spectator, the wines are “polished and sleek,” “so easy to drink on their own,” and “sing with food.”
However you refer to this crimson wine, one thing is clear: The 2016 Lange Estate Liberty Bell Pinot Noir—only available at the winery or right here—is a wine of charm, energy, vibrancy, and potential. In other words, a perfect evocation of a vintage that will be talked about for decades to come.
