As Good as Tuscany’s Best, for So Much Less

Today, this 98-point 2016 proves Montevetrano delivers the complexity, grace, and elegance of the world’s most collectible, long-lived Cabernet blends, and proves greatness doesn’t have to cost a fortune… if you know where to look.

Former Wine Spectator European Bureau Chief James Suckling’s back-to-back 98-point reviews finally got the word out: “Super Campanian” red blends have all of the potential of their infinitely more expensive Super Tuscan and Bordeaux counterparts. And Antonio Galloni himself wrote in Wine Advocate, “Montevetrano [is] the wine that launched Campania in a big way around the world.”

This fresh blend of Cabernet, Aglianico, and Merlot vastly over-delivers for the money. Aromas of toasted spices, black cherry liqueur, and anise are followed by a concentrated palate of dark fruit and spice. Wine Advocate raved, “The 2016 Montevetrano hits it out of the ballpark with beautiful intensity,” in their 95-point review, noting that the wine offers “the structure and the cherry-infused softness” of Cab and Merlot, alongside Aglianico’s concentrated fruit flavors.

Before Montevetrano came along, Campania was known for soulful wines from Greco di Tufo, Fiano, and Aglianico. Owner Silvia Imparato and winemaker Ricardo Cotarella (whom Food & Wine magazine has called “The Wine Wizard”) transformed Silvia’s family estate into a Campanian powerhouse, and a serious challenger to Tuscany’s greats. For fans of the great Super Tuscans like Ornellaia and Solaia, the 2016 Montevetrano is a fantastic addition to the collection, at a fraction of the price.

Silvia looked to the past, and because the Montevetrano castle had once been owned by the French Bourbons, she decided to plant Cabernet and Merlot alongside the Aglianico that grew so brilliantly there. She was onto something: Everything about Montevetrano’s terroir is perfect for the Bordeaux grapes, from the calcareous silty-loam soils that allow the roots to sink deep into the earth, to the southwest exposure that guarantees the afternoon sunlight ripens each and every grape to perfection.

It just doesn’t get any better than this. For everyone who’s ever lusted after a world-class Cab-based blend but lamented the cost, the 2016 Montevetrano is the cure.
