The 100-Point Winemaker on Mt. Veeder
The 100-Point Winemaker on Mt. Veeder
Cabernet collectors, take notice. 100-point winemaker Tim Milos (Opus One, Stag’s Leap, Cliff Lede) has crafted a staggering mountain Napa Cabernet that stands shoulder to shoulder with the appellation’s top wines for almost half the cost. Single-vineyard Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon like this rarely sells for less than $100—think Lokoya ($400), Hall Wines Segassia Vineyard ($185) and O'Shaughnessy ($120). The 2016 Rubissow Cabernet Sauvignon Mount Veeder is ripe and richly textured, elegant and full of class, walking the line between Mount Veeder opulence and Pauillac refinement.
$95 on release. Something far more irresistible ($54.99—42% off) on today’s Wine Access EXCLUSIVE. Two barrels or 600 bottles are up for grabs.
In 2009, following introductions from a handful of America’s most notable restaurateurs, we took our first drive to Rubissow Vineyard. Everything that we’d been told about this magnificent 18.5-acre planting—set on a sunny, south-facing cutout, framed by redwoods and oak—was true. After trekking steep clay and sandstone hillsides with Peter, we returned to the family’s modest tasting room. An hour later we fully understood why Tim Milos’ Cabernet Sauvignon had charmed the pants off of sommeliers at Craft, Keen’s Steakhouse, and Thomas Keller’s Per Se in New York, Charlie Trotter in Chicago, Quince and Spruce in San Francisco, Alinea in Chicago, Sweet Basil in Vail, and Caribou Club in Aspen.
Since then, we’ve been back to the Rubissow’s cult enclave a handful of times, once for an eight-year vertical tasting that had us gushing over the age-worthiness of older vintages—2004, 2005, and 2007.
Today’s 2016 ranks among the greatest vintages to come off of this estate, testifying to the enduring legacy of André Tchelistcheff, who acted as consultant and guide when Rubissow’s hillsides were planted in 1983. The “Little Russian’s” influence can be tasted in each sip of this bold Mt. Veeder Cabernet, as can the unmistakable signature of the outstanding 2016 vintage: deep concentration and delicious ripeness. Our small allocation consists of just 600 bottles, which are sure to be snapped up in a flash by savvy collectors. If you are serious about Napa Valley Cabernet, be quick on the draw today.
