    A Seldom-Seen Library Vintage

Antonio Galloni declared that “2016 is one of the most consistently brilliant and alluring young vintages I have ever tasted in Sonoma…The Russian River in particular seems to have experienced a tremendous vintage.”

Now, back vintage Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs with seven years of age are exceedingly hard to find—especially when there were less than a dozen barrels made. And when it’s from one of the best vintages of the last decade—from a single vineyard near Kistler’s Vine Hill—AND guided to bottle by Stéphane Vivier, it’s a rare bird indeed.

Pinot Noirs with this kind of pedigree are usually locked down for high-profile restaurants. That’s exactly what happened with the 2016 Tobias Glen JINSEI Pinot Noir. Until we got it, it was on hold for a prominent restaurant group boasting multiple Michelin-starred restaurants.

Winemaker Stéphane Vivier rose through the ranks of the wine world and eventually found himself accompanying DRC’s Aubert de Villaine to California to be the winemaker for Hyde de Villaine. Today he focuses primarily on his own label, but also consults for a few key clients like Tobias Glen.

Their Goldridge soils are also responsible for some of the greatest wines in the Russian River Valley, such as Merry Edwards, Williams-Selyem, and Flowers. Viticulturists love it: One said, “It’s my favorite soil. It’s easy to grow high-end fruit for clients; you can grow anything in it.” Combined with Russian River’s foggy, ocean-influenced climate, it offers the perfect conditions to challenge the vines, yielding flavorful, concentrated grapes.
