A Monument of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon

We can’t overstate how extraordinary the 2016 Wynns Cabernet Sauvignon John Riddoch is.

With its stunning 99-point score, it was Decanter’s top-rated Australian Cabernet of 2016. And although we like to stick to apples-to-apples comparisons, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention that it outscored titans like the 2016 Château Margaux and 2016 Harlan Estate, not to mention some of the most iconic wines made Down Under, including the Henschke Hill of Grace and Penfolds Grange.

This Limited Release Cabernet is only made in great vintages, using the top 1% of all the Cabernet grown on the Wynns estate. No wine more beautifully expresses the terroir of Coonawarra, whose iron-oxide-rich terra rossa soils make it one of Australia’s most treasured grapegrowing regions.

Scottish immigrant John Riddoch, the founder of Wynns Coonawarra Estate, planted the original vineyards in 1891, which lie equidistant from Adelaide and Melbourne. The Wynn family of wine merchants purchased the estate in 1951, and seven decades later, Wynns stands as the largest and best producer in Coonawarra.

This homage to Riddoch is a parcel and barrel selection narrowed down from as many as 16 of Wynns’ top Cabernet vineyards. The final blend includes fruit from just two or three vineyards, and only gets made in the best vintages. Winemaker Sue Hodder views the august track record of this bottling as something to be mightily defended—and that doesn’t necessarily happen at comparable estates in Bordeaux.

Australian wine authority James Halliday called the Riddoch “a Cabernet of the highest class.” Be advised that just as the original 1982 bottling is still going strong today, the 2016 has the potential to drink beautifully into its thirties as well!
