Top Value High Altitude Malbec

The Michelini brothers like it at the top. From their perch, some 4,500 feet up the Andes mountains they figured out how to marry sun-kissed southern hemisphere fruit and lushness, with the fresh acid-cut of classic European reds.

James Suckling hailed the complexity of a “very blueberry-themed nose that also features violets and lots of lavender,” a palate etched with “granite, slate and other crushed stones,” as well as “fine, elegant tannins,” and “racy acidity.” Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate got right to the heart of the matter, adding, “This is a very nice representation of the place, grape and year at an unbeatable price.” From 4,500 feet up in the foothills of the Andes, the Zorzal Gran Terroir Malbec is not only at the pinnacle of Mendoza, it’s also at the top of its class in value.

The Michelini brothers founded Zorzal in 2007 with an absolute laser-focus on quality. They wanted to craft wines of power, finesse, and nuance. To do so, they sought out the highest altitude plot they could find in Gualtallary—a stunning sub-region in Mendoza’s Tupungato—which allows them to make classic examples of Malbec with maximal phenolic ripeness, without overblown alcohol levels. The organic farming, indigenous yeast fermentations, and light-touch winemaking let Gualtallary’s singular terroir shine through, painting a striking portrait of this clear-skied, volcanic landscape.

The Gran Terroir Malbec will appeal to both New World and Old World drinkers, boasting southern hemisphere sun-kissed fruit and a lush body, fused with polished tannic structure, and the fresh acid-cut of European reds. Given the incredible quality it delivers for the cost, the Gran Terroir is also a sommelier favorite. Soon to be a favorite of yours.
